## Overview

Utah's deep-tech story is easier to trust when the current companies are placed beside the older work that made the state credible. This map is not a ranking and not a complete history. It is a set of durable reference points: where Utah has already produced world-shaping technical or cultural work, and where today's builders can see the live threads.

## Computing and Scientific Software

[University of Utah Computer Graphics Program](utah-computer-graphics-program.md) is the historical anchor. It explains why Utah belongs in any serious history of rendering, human-computer interaction, simulation, Adobe, Pixar, SGI, and visual computing.

[University of Utah ARPANET Fourth Node](arpanet-fourth-node.md) and [Evans & Sutherland](evans-and-sutherland.md) make the same era feel more complete. One is the network layer: Utah as part of the first four-node packet-switched research network. The other is the commercialization layer: Utah graphics ideas becoming real-time 3D hardware and flight-simulation systems.

[WordPerfect and Novell](wordperfect-and-novell.md), [Omniture Web Analytics](omniture-web-analytics.md), and [Soundstream and Commercial Digital Audio Recording](soundstream-digital-audio-recording.md) extend the software-history layer: Utah Valley as a place that shipped dominant word processors, office networks, enterprise analytics, and early digital audio before "Silicon Slopes" became the default frame.

The live thread is [SCI Institute](sci-institute.md): scientific computing, visualization, biomedical software, open-source research tools, and a student pipeline that still turns abstract computation into instruments other scientists use. [PassiveLogic](passivelogic.md) carries a different Utah software thread into physical buildings: edge AI, digital twins, and autonomous controls. [Weave](weave.md) represents applied AI in healthcare communications; [Palladyne AI](palladyne-ai.md) and the [Utah NeuroRobotics Lab](utah-neurorobotics-lab.md) carry embodied-AI and neural-interface threads; [UTahQuantum](utahquantum.md) is a concept-stage quantum-readiness initiative worth watching.

## Biology and Medical Devices

[Capecchi Gene Targeting and the Knockout Mouse](capecchi-gene-targeting.md) is the basic-science anchor: a Utah lab helped make targeted mammalian genetics practical. [Jarvik-7 Artificial Heart](jarvik-7-artificial-heart.md) is the medical-device anchor: Utah tried a world-first implantable system in the clinic and forced the field to deal with the consequences.

The live thread runs through [Recursion Pharmaceuticals](recursion-pharmaceuticals.md), [Merit Medical Systems](merit-medical.md), and [Blackrock Neurotech](blackrock-neurotech.md). They represent three very different Utah modes: AI-biology scale, FDA-regulated interventional manufacturing, and long-horizon neural hardware. [Utah Array BCI Platform](utah-array-bci-platform.md) is the research anchor that predates the commercial BCI company. [Huntsman Cancer Institute](huntsman-cancer-institute.md), [BioFire Diagnostics](biofire-diagnostics.md), [Techcyte](techcyte.md), [Halia Therapeutics](halia-therapeutics.md), and [Nusano](nusano.md) extend the map across comprehensive cancer research, syndromic diagnostics, digital pathology, inflammation therapeutics, and medical radioisotopes.

[Utah Population Database](utah-population-database.md), [Myriad Genetics BRCA Sequencing and Testing](myriad-genetics-brca.md), and [HELP Clinical Decision Support System](help-clinical-decision-support-system.md) add the data-infrastructure layer. They show a different Utah advantage: linked records, hereditary-cancer research, medical informatics, and health systems willing to turn data into research or clinical workflow.

[Conotoxins and Prialt](conotoxins-and-prialt.md) and [Intermountain Clinical Quality Improvement](intermountain-clinical-quality-improvement.md) add translational and delivery-system anchors: venom-peptide drug discovery and a health system that turned quality improvement into exportable clinical knowledge.

## Aerospace, Defense, and Field Hardware

[Thiokol Solid Rocket Motors](thiokol-solid-rocket-motors.md) is the manufacturing anchor: remote, dangerous, high-consequence propulsion work done at national scale. [Space Dynamics Laboratory](space-dynamics-laboratory.md) is the research-and-mission-hardware anchor.

The current map includes [Fortem Technologies](fortem-technologies.md) for counter-UAS systems, [Hexcel Corporation](hexcel.md) for aerospace composite manufacturing, [IMSAR](imsar.md) for compact SAR on small UAS, [Strider Technologies](strider-technologies.md) for strategic intelligence, [Teal Drones](teal-drones.md) for domestic small-UAS manufacturing, [Baxter Aerospace](baxter-aerospace.md) for long-endurance VTOL and deployable comms, and [Hypercraft](hypercraft.md) for hybrid-electric defense mobility. [LiveView Technologies](liveview-technologies.md) belongs here with surveillance and civil-liberties caveats — commercial-scale security hardware, not a frontier deep-tech bet. [Varda Space Industries](varda-space.md) is included as a UTTR reentry-infrastructure case study, not a Utah employer. These are not generic software opportunities. They reward people who understand hardware, quality, testing, procurement, and field deployment.

## Energy, Earth, and Infrastructure

[Golden Spike and the First Transcontinental Railroad](golden-spike-transcontinental-railroad.md) is the infrastructure anchor: the moment a national logistics system became continuous at Promontory Summit. The modern analog is not one-to-one, but the pattern is familiar: Utah as a place where geography and infrastructure collide.

The live energy thread runs through [Utah FORGE](utah-forge.md), [Fervo Energy](fervo-energy.md), [Zanskar Geothermal](zanskar-geothermal.md), [Torus](torus.md) for flywheel storage, [Energy Fuels / White Mesa](energy-fuels-white-mesa.md) for uranium and critical-minerals processing, and [US Magnesium](us-magnesium.md) for primary magnesium from Great Salt Lake brine (currently in Chapter 11 — treat as a cautionary industrial case). [Autonomous Solutions, Inc.](autonomous-solutions-inc.md) extends the thread into off-road industrial autonomy for mining, agriculture, and construction.

## Physics and Materials

[Fly's Eye and HiRes Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays](flys-eye-hires-cosmic-rays.md) is the desert-science anchor. It turns the West Desert from empty-looking land into an instrument for particle astrophysics, and it connects directly to the later [Telescope Array](telescope-array-ultra-high-energy-cosmic-rays.md).

[Harvey Fletcher Stereophonic Sound](harvey-fletcher-stereophonic-sound.md) and [H. Tracy Hall Diamond Presses](h-tracy-hall-diamond-presses.md) show Utah's materials-and-instruments lineage: psychoacoustics and hearing science from a BYU-trained Bell Labs leader, and synthetic-diamond manufacturing from a University of Utah chemist who built the high-pressure apparatus that made industrial diamond practical.

[Pons-Fleischmann Cold Fusion](pons-fleischmann-cold-fusion.md) belongs in the map as a cautionary episode, not a validated energy breakthrough. It matters because Utah hosted one of the most famous replication failures in modern science — and the institutional response still shapes how the state should talk about bold claims.

## Defense and Mechanical Systems

[Browning Firearms Designs](browning-firearms-designs.md) is the older mechanical-design anchor. It belongs here with heavy caveats because its impact is inseparable from weapons and organized violence, but it is also one of Utah's clearest examples of durable mechanical invention.

[Utah Test and Training Range](utah-test-and-training-range.md) and [Dugway Proving Ground](dugway-proving-ground.md) are the test-infrastructure anchors. They belong in the map because aerospace and defense work needs places to test, measure, and train, but both pages need environmental, public-health, and community-impact caveats.

The modern defense thread should not flatten into "defense tech." [Fortem Technologies](fortem-technologies.md), [Space Dynamics Laboratory](space-dynamics-laboratory.md), and [Hexcel Corporation](hexcel.md) sit in different parts of the stack: sensing and autonomy, mission hardware, and materials/manufacturing.

## Culture, Place, and Institutions

[Spiral Jetty](spiral-jetty.md) and [Sundance Institute](sundance-institute.md) make the cultural map harder to dismiss. They show Utah as a place where landscape, story, and institution-building can become internationally legible.

For helpers, this matters because not every valuable match is technical. Artists, media technologists, nonprofit operators, foundation people, designers, and real-time 3D builders can be part of the same ecosystem map when the wiki is honest about what kind of work they are joining.

## How To Use This Map

Students should use historical anchors to find the live institution that inherits the skill. Graphics points toward SCI. Gene targeting points toward biomedical research and AI biology. Solid rockets point toward aerospace manufacturing and defense hardware. Golden Spike points toward infrastructure, energy, and field execution. Spiral Jetty points toward place-based cultural work.

Founders should use the map to ask which Utah advantage they are actually using. Is it a research lineage, a manufacturing workforce, a desert testbed, a regulatory-heavy medical-device cluster, a geothermal geology pattern, or an institution that makes outsiders travel here?

Helpers should use the map to avoid generic advice. A propulsion company, a biomedical device company, a geothermal explorer, and an arts nonprofit do not need the same lawyer, recruiter, CFO, grant writer, or storyteller.
