[H. Tracy Hall's diamond presses](h-tracy-hall-diamond-presses.md) in detail — the first
reproducible synthetic diamond, made at General Electric in 1954, and the tetrahedral and cubic
presses Hall invented after returning to BYU. What the corpus has not carried until now is what
happened next in Utah: the apparatus became an industry.

## Impact

The chain is short, and unusually legible for an industrial lineage. The *Deseret News* groups Bill
Pope with Tracy Hall and Duane Horton at MegaDiamond, "their first company," without saying who
founded it or when, and credits that work with letting "oil and natural gas companies … chew through
thousands of feet of rock without needing to replace the drill bits"
([Deseret News, 2010](deseret-news-bill-pope-obituary-2010.md)). The corpus dates MegaDiamond's
founding to 1966 on [the Hall page](h-tracy-hall-diamond-presses.md), from its own sources; nothing
captured here confirms that date. The transmission mechanism to US
Synthetic is a specific one rather than a family resemblance: **Louis Pope managed MegaDiamond's
manufacturing plant for five years** — developing processes and helping design hydraulic presses —
before launching his own company in **April 1978** and bringing his father Bill in as its first
president ([Deseret News, 1998](deseret-news-us-synthetic-1998.md)). Bill Pope later founded a third
company, **Diamicron**, at 75, applying the same materials technology to diamond-coated hip joints.

The company nearly died before any of that mattered. It started making diamond grit for
grinding wheels, not drill-bit cutters, and by **1985** executives were going unpaid, the workforce
had fallen from thirteen to six, Louis Pope's house was in foreclosure, and an investor's accountant
was recommending bankruptcy ([Deseret News, 1998](deseret-news-us-synthetic-1998.md)). The company's
own timeline glosses that era as "in many ways it was a miracle we did"
([company history](us-synthetic-company-history.md)).

The two sources disagree about when the pivot to oil and gas happened, and the wiki does not
adjudicate: the company timeline dates its first PDC inserts to **1983**, before the crisis, while
the 1998 profile describes the shift from grinding wheels to drill-bit materials as Pope's response
to it. Either way, a counterfactual account of Utah's diamond industry has to reckon with how close
the industrial half of it came to ending in 1985.

The breadth argument rests on where the product ends up, and it is the weakest leg of the case
because the wiki has no independent measure of it. A PDC cutter is a component nobody outside the
industry has heard of, sold into what ChampionX called "the world's most demanding oil exploration
and development projects"
([ChampionX, 2025](championx-us-synthetic-sale-announcement-2025.md)). If the company's claim to have
been "the industry's leading supplier of diamond products" by 1997 is even roughly right, then a
substantial share of the world's drilled footage since has been cut by material pressed in Utah
County. That claim is the company's own and is repeated here as a claim, not as a fact — no
third-party market-share figure has been pulled.

One measure of scale that is not self-reported did surface: when ChampionX agreed in February 2025
to sell the company, its filed announcement stated that "US Synthetic comprises the Drilling
Technologies segment of ChampionX"
([ChampionX, 2025](championx-us-synthetic-sale-announcement-2025.md)) — the Orem operation was an
entire reporting segment of a NASDAQ-listed company, not a product line within one. Rob Galloway is
named as US Synthetic's CEO in 2010 and as ChampionX's President of Drilling Technologies in 2025;
what happened in between is not documented here.

The permanence argument is stronger and does not depend on market share. The line of descent is
documented, and the same materials science has been pushed outward into mining tools, diamond
bearings, and orthopedic implants — each a business the company or its siblings names. More than
seventy years after the first synthesis, the capability is still compounding in Utah County, within
a few miles of the BYU laboratory it came from.

**Bet:** that the durable Utah asset was never the diamond but the *press* — that owning
high-pressure, high-temperature apparatus design lets one company keep finding new industries to
enter, long after the original one matures or declines. Diamicron and the mining and bearing lines
are that bet being placed repeatedly.

The honest counterweight: this is a components supplier to fossil-fuel extraction, and the majority
of its business rises and falls with drilling activity. The wiki records magnitude, not sign, and
the magnitude here is large in both directions.

## Utah Context

Orem, with the founding lineage running back through Provo — MegaDiamond and Hall's BYU laboratory
are within a few miles of the current plant. This is a genuine Utah County industrial cluster built
on one piece of materials science, and it is nearly invisible in public accounts of the state's
economy, which tend to start with software.

It also connects the wiki's `materials-mfg` pages to its `energy` pages through a physical product
rather than a theme: the same company that descends from an academic high-pressure laboratory sells
into global oilfield services.

## What They Need Now

Manufacturing and process operations dominate — press operation, materials handling, and finishing
work on parts held to tight tolerances. Around that sit materials and mechanical engineering roles
tied to press design and diamond synthesis, plus applications engineering for customers specifying
cutters for particular formations.

The company describes itself as family-oriented with an emphasis on training and internal
development ([official site](us-synthetic-official-website.md)), which reads as a company that
hires for aptitude and teaches the specialized parts — plausible for an industry where almost
nobody arrives already knowing how to press diamond.

## Open Questions

- **The reason for the 2025 divestiture is not established.** Secondary reporting says SLB required
  it because SLB already owned MegaDiamond, a direct competitor. ChampionX's own announcement gives
  no reason — it only makes the sale conditional on the SLB transaction closing, which is consistent
  with an antitrust remedy without demonstrating one. If the MegaDiamond explanation is right it is
  the most interesting fact about this company, so it deserves a real source: SLB's merger filings
  or a regulatory clearance document, neither of which has been pulled.
- **The earlier ownership chain is still unsourced.** Acquired by Dover Corporation in 2004, spun
  into Apergy in 2018, carried into ChampionX when Apergy merged with Ecolab's upstream business in
  2020. All of that is secondary; Dover and ChampionX are SEC registrants and it is recoverable.
- **The sale's completion is not confirmed.** The captured document announces a definitive
  agreement, not a closing. A later 8-K or SLB's next 10-K would settle it.
- **No identifier resolved yet.** No `cik`, `ein`, or `utah-entity` is recorded, so none of the
  Class A registries can be run against this page. Per P5 precedent 1 in `meta/conventions.md`,
  the identifier should come before any further research.
- **No registration record has been pulled for the founding.** The 1978 date and the Pope father-son
  arrangement now rest on a captured 1998 newspaper profile and the company's own timeline, which
  agree on the year but not on who was involved — the company's version names only Louis Pope. A
  Utah Division of Corporations record would settle it.
- **Market position is unverified.** "Leading supplier of diamond products by 1997" and "leader in
  the development and production of PDCs" are both self-reported. No independent market data has
  been located.
- **Headcount is a single self-reported figure** — approximately 400, from the company's own About
  page, undated.
- **MegaDiamond, Diamicron, Louis Pope, and Bill Pope have no pages**, and the *Deseret News*
  feature is currently the only source in the corpus for the lineage. A second, independent source
  for the MegaDiamond founding — ideally the company's own records or a BYU archive holding —
  would make the chain solid rather than merely attested.
